I’m graduating in May of 2012. How do I get student loans for college?

If you’re a minor, unless you’re emancipated from your parents/guardians and have been living on your own and paying your own bills entirely on your own, you will need a co-signer. PERIOD, end of tale.

Without a Cosigner you could get a Stafford loan, these are the most well loved loans that people take when they do not have a cosigner, they are excellent because the Government will pay all of the interest of your loan up until you graduate, meaning less money for you to pay off in the long run!

Nope, you’re not completely screwed. But you will need to work hard to pay down that debt and work like a mofo to budget. I graduated in 2005 with a BA in Studio Art and Interaction and about $ 40k in loans and I’m down to around $ 20k but I’ve been budgeting like a mofo. I’ll be 30 in January and I don’t get to go on all those fancy vacations and buy fancy things like the people whose parents paid for their school but I have my own house and car.

My boyfriend, on the other hand,graduated in 2005 with a BS in Education and still has most of his loans and has had a heck of a time getting hired as a hs teacher. He was employed for about 2 years but then lost his job.

If you can’t find a job as a teacher, a excellent alternative is the Peace Corps which is a 2 year commitment http://www.peacecorps.gov/ or http://www.americorps.gov/

Both of these are non pay positions but you get a small stipend, loan deferment, they pay back some of your loans, and it looks incredible on your resume. If you’re young, DEFINITELY recommend this because in the long run it will give you a one up on some of your professional struggle.
