how does Duke accommodate low income students?

The question

for all those who are familar with the finacial aid/grants/loans/erudition process, i was wondering how much money should i expect duke to contribute toward my tuition if my parents make an income that is less than 50,000 a yr, and in 2011-2012 school year my family will have 2 students in college, how much should i expect to pay?

gpa is in top 1%, and im african american!

From their website: http://dukefinancialaid.duke.edu/undergraduate/prospectives/howitworks/need.html
“Duke expects no parent contribution ($ 0) for domestic families with a total institutionally determined income under $ 60,000.”
So if the combined income of your parents is >$ 50,00 (with no assets like a sprawling mansion or anything), then they will not be expected to pay ANYTHING :) Duke is extremely generous, since they have the funds to afford it.
You, but, will be expected to pay — you’ll likely contribute part of your income if you have a job, and do work-study during school. It won’t amount to much more than $ 2000/yr, though. You’ll receive grants for the rest of tuition.
Excellent luck!!

DLAB and Security Clearance?

The question

Hi :)

Okay, so I’m enlisting in the Army, and my top MOSs are in MI. My ASVAB scores are high enough that I can get any job I want (as long as it’s available, and NOT infantry b/c I’m a female)…the MOS I’m MOST interested in is 35M and although it doesn’t REQUIRE language training, I want to learn Arabic (or whatever other language that’s in high demand) and hopefully increase my chances of deploying and just doing more altogether. I know that for this MOS I certainly need a clearance (I need a secret for now, or so I’ve read, but by 10/2012, I’ll need a TS/SCI, so I guess it’s best to just get the TS/SCI now) and I know I have to take the DLAB before Uncle Sam will send me to DLI. So here are my questions: When would I take the DLAB? I haven’t been to MEPS yet–would I take it there? Also, when would I know if I qualify for a clearance? I’m assuming I’d have to know that prior to going to MEPS b/c it wouldn’t make sense to be offered a job I’m not fully qualified for…If I’m not qualified for the job, then I want to get the thought of having that MOS out of my head now, and focus on my other MOS of interest (25M).

Also, when I was 18 (I’m 22 now), I went CRAZY w/ credit cards Freshman year of college and wound up getting sent to collections more times than I can count. I paid off ALL my debt a small over 2 years ago (I’m still in school now, and my student loans are deferred so they don’t count yet), but my credit is still shot to Hell–but it’s improving. I also have 3 tickets (1 speeding, 1 accident and 1 for not having my headlights on) that happened a few years ago (all paid) and I was wondering if any of those would negatively impact me getting a clearance.

I’m certainly going to question my recruiter when he’s back in the office next week, but I’m an impatient person and I want answers NOW (lol), so I’m turning to the Yahoo! Answers community–thanks in advance and Pleased Veteran’s Day!!
EDIT: 25M is pretty much the only MOS I’m interested in that wouldn’t require the things the MI MOSs I want would require (language training and a TS/SCI clearance). If 35M isn’t available, and I can get the training AND clearance, I’d go 35W if possible…I’m also interested in 46Q, 46R and 27D, but they all require clearances as well, even though they’re not MI…

I can only speak from experience with security clearances, as for a secret you should be excellent to go. As long as all your current debt is paid and you don’t have any outstanding debts that are 90 days over due. The tickets shouldn’t be a problem for secret as long as they were all taken care of, and the “accident” was an accident and not negligence. For your TS well that is a different tale, you will be scrutinized something fierce, you should be excellent to get one with your minor infractions with your driving and financial history. But, be EXTREMELY carefully on who you place for contacts in the form. Who your friends are, and most importantly what they say about you, could ruin your chances of getting a TS. When the interview you, keep this in mind. Don’t Lie, Don’t collude, Be 100% honest no matter how awkward it is, because they already know the truth.

Excellent luck!!!
