Will working part time last year affect my student aid this year?

Will working part time last year affect my student aid this year?

The question

My parent’s make under $ 25,000 combined and so I qualified for a federal pell grant and other loans for my fall semester and spring semester (sep 2011-may 2012) , I did not work at all until after I started school (september) and so had no adjusted income to report for 2010 I but started a part time job but quit and for that time period I had an income of $ 6,000. I reported it on my FAFSFA for the 2012-2013 school year and i’m just wondering if that will disqualify me from a pell grant or decrease my loans?? thank you!

undergraduate student loans

I made $ 6,000 one year and $ 12,000 another year, and my student loans were never effected.
You can work part-time or summer time as long as you limit it. Making minium wage you should limit your hours to about 12 hours a week, which is perfect to balance with college. You dont want to make much over 6000 a year.

NO – absolutely not.

Should I open a credit card?

The question

I am 24 years ancient and I have honest credit. I recently was denied a car refinance based on my credit score/report. I have three things on my report: my perfect car loan, a credit card charge off that won’t come off until 2013, and a paid as agreed student loan. I need to bring up my credit score/report. I know that opening a credit card will help but I am unsure of opening one since that is what brought down my report in the first place. Granted, I was 18 and was not smart. Now, I would use it very small and keep up with payments. I just don’t know if it is a the smartest thought. HELP!

student loan interest deduction income limit

A new form of credit will lower your score for the first 6 months.
A much better thought is to forcefully pay off that current card loan if the interest rate is too high. Had to mention it since some people are not aware that you can pay off a loan early.

Also careful with that charge off.
These collection agencies tend to sue you right before the statute of limitations is up. Have some money in savings in case this happens so you can negotiate a settlement before it goes to court

I agree with Huntsman…don’t play around with that charge off. Take a look at this site.
It will give you info about what you’re currently going through.
